One of the most sought-after baseball cards, this Joshua Gibson gem comes from the latter days of his career when the Negro Leagues superstar suited up in Puerto Rico, issued after his death in 1947. This is the only Gibson card ever manufactured, and in a previous auction, Leland's was proud to offer an SGC 88 NM-MT 8 example that sold for approximately $70,000. Card is 1-5/8 x 2-3/8". A dominant catcher and lethal power hitter, Gibson is the most celebrated Negro Leagues star ever, and may have been the most talented player overall. He is believed to have hit approximately 950 home runs over the course of his career, though several of those likely came during exhibitions and barnstorming trips while he was a member of the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords. Gibson hit roughly .384 for his career and was rumored to have even blasted a ball over the cavernous left-field facade at Yankee Stadium. Less than a dozen of these cards are known to exist, making it one of the most important cards to own. Graded PSA 4 VG-EX.
