This stunning, almost photo-realistic hand-painted oil piece of Rogers Hornsby by famed artist Griffith Foxley details the great ballplayer known by many as "The Rajah". With the second highest batting average in history (.358), Hornsby became synonymous with consistency in baseball, combining speed, power and legendarily high batting averages. Foxley's 11x15" portrait shows the weathered veteran wearing a St. Louis Cardinal's jersey and cap against a blue sky backdrop. It is signed by Foxley and has minor chipping and wear around the edges. This original artwork was featured in the July 1949 issue of Sport magazine in conjunction with a six page story on Hornsby. The July 1949 Sport Magazine, is included with this lot.
