Tony Conigliaro was a popular Red Sox outfielder with enormous potential whose career was tragically altered when he was hit in the face by a pitched ball in 1967. This is a bat Conigliaro used with the Red Sox, most likely prior to his injury, as he did not return to major league play from the injury until 1969. The Louisville Slugger Model S180 measures 36" in length, weighs 32 oz. and shows light use. The number 31 1/2 is written on the knob in pencil. Even though Conigliaro was voted Comeback Player of the Year in 1969, the beaning he suffered damaged his vision and shortened his career. In its aftermath, protective ear flaps became standard on major league batting helmets.
