Born a slave in what is now called Richmondtown, Staten Island, NY, Bill Richmond went on to become one of boxing's most accomplished and respected fighters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Nicknamed the "Black Terror”, Richmond fought many times in England against opponents such as Tom Cribb, George Moore, Paddy Green and Frank Mayers. "Gentleman" John Jackson was a contemporary of Richmond's, and was named champion of England in 1795 by defeating Daniel Mendoza, who is considered the father of scientific boxing. Presented here is a receipt dated March 26, 1814, signed "Wm Richmond”, for his fight against Jack Davies which was held on May 3, 1814. Davies has also signed a separate receipt made out on the same page below that of Richmond and dated April 16, 1814. All of the writing on the page, notwithstanding the aforementioned signatures, is in the hand of Richmond's fellow Hall of Famer John Jackson, who promoted and ran the fight, and he has added his signature within the content of these "IOU" receipts he has diligently made out to keep record of money advanced to the two fighters. Until the recent discovery of a small cache of early 19th century pugilist signatures in an archive in England, it was thought that no Richmond autographs were left in existence. This document originated from that remarkable find and it represents the only known autograph of Bill Richmond, as well as being one of fewer than five such documents bearing John Jackson's writing and signature. The page has one horizontal fold in the center and some minor chipping on the right edge. The writing is bold and in black ink.
