One of the most memorable moments in American sports history is Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World". The original wire photo is 9" x 7 1/8" and in EX-NRMT condition with a staple in the left hand white border area and some small creases. Thomson hit a walk-off home run for the New York Giants off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds to win the National League pennant on October 3, 1951 at 3:58 p.m. As a result of the "shot", the Giants won the game 5-4, defeating the crosstown Brooklyn Dodgers in their pennant playoff series, two games to one in their 3 game tie breaking playoff. This particular International News photo depicts a rare view taken from the second base area looking in at the celebration occurring at home plate. It shows a dejected Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca walking off the mound head down.
