The 31st Congress presided during a tumultuous time for the US Presidency. Zachary Taylor was Commander in Chief when it convened in 1850 and by the end of the year Millard Fillmore would be leading the country. It was also the first year California was represented in congress. Here is a fascinating collection of mint signatures, in (2) volumes, from the members of that 31st congress. On the first page of the marbled-cover volume, is the signature of the Speaker of the House, Howell Cobb. The new California reps and many future senators have also signed within these pages. The owner, a Congressional page, made notes throughout highlighting important individuals and what their future positions became. The front boards of both books have separated from the volume and have bumping on the corners and spine. The interior pages are excellent, however, and the signatures are well preserved. Comes with a floor plan and directory for the Hall of the House of Representatives that is EX+ and contemporary with the autograph albums.
