John L. Sullivan was the last World Heavyweight Champion from the
bare knuckle era. He won the title in 1882 from Paddy Ryan and
successfully defended it against Charlie Mitchell, Jake Kilrain and
others over a ten year period before losing it in 1892 to James J.
Corbett. Presented here is a rare signed cabinet card photograph of
John L. Sullivan. Sullivan has signed and inscribed this cabinet
twice, on both the front and reverse in fountain pen. The cabinet
card is 4” x 6 ?”. It has chipped corners and some edge chips. There
is a crease which has been reinforced on the reverse with tape. Some
light spots. It is quite rare to have Sullivan’s signature on a
photograph, not once, but twice.
