Beginning with the Civil War and the assassination of President Lincoln, one family from Connecticut collected newspapers reporting on some of the most important events in this county’s history. It is fascinating to read the familiar stories not from a historical standpoint but as current events. These are the front pages unless otherwise noted. In chronological order: New York Tribune, March 31, 1865 with reports on Civil War with long lists of Union dead. New York Herald, April 10, 1865, reporting Lee’s surrender to Grant and the end of the Civil War. Hartford Daily Courant, April 15, 1865 reporting the assassination of President Lincoln. World, April 16, 1912 (full issue) reporting the Titanic disaster. Hartford Times, July 20, 1927 (full issue) Col. Lindberg lands at Brainard Field. Hartford Courant, July 31, 1927 special section reporting on aviator Charles Lindberg’s welcome parade in Hartford. Hartford Times, May 7, 1937 reporting on the Hindenburg disaster and accusations of sabotage. Hartford Courant, December 7, 1941 reports on Pearl harbor and Japan declaring war on US. Hartford Times, Hartford Courant, Daily Mirror December 8, 1941 reports on Pearl Harbor and Roosevelt’s request to declare war on Japan. Hartford Times, December 13, 1941 with WWII reports from Pacific and Europe. Hartford Times, December 6, 1943 reporting plan by FDR, Churchill & Stalin to defeat Nazi Germany. Hartford Courant, July 7, 1944 reporting on huge circus fire in Hartford. Stars and Stripes, May 2, 1945 reporting Hitler Dead. Hartford Courant, August 10, 1945 extra reporting on Japan’s surrender.
