Masterful depiction of an early game is football at its antiquated best. Stunning rendition in molded plaster of the players in union suits trying to pull down a runner with trademark stocking cap of this Ivy League dominated era. The detail is fantabulous from the lacing in the melon ball to the expressive faces that seem to scream “Heffilfinger.” Statue is by the great John Rogers who was the top commercial statue maker of the time. His line covered everything from Civil War to classical themes at prices that just about everyone could afford. This was from the days of Sears & Roebuck delivered via Wells Fargo wagons allowing previously secluded America access to popular culture. Some very minor paint chips (nothing) but overall excellent condition with original paint and patina. Base is entitled “Football” with the John Rogers 19 West 12 S New York” incised. Reproductions exist, but this is original. A stately 16.5x11x10”.
