Jack Johnson was the first African American to win the World Heavyweight Title. He was also one of the most controversial figures in American history. Assembled here are four fantastic original antique photographs of Jack Johnson taken during his career. First is a 9” x 11 ?” shot of Johnson by Sarony Company of New York taken in 1909. Johnson is in period dress with a dapper suit and derby hat. The photo has been glued to a cardboard backing and some glue stains have come through. Still, a rare and beautiful image. The second shot shows Johnson with two gentlemen and was also taken by Sarony Company . This is 7” x 9” and has been mounted. There are some pieces chipped from the corners outside the images. Likely taken in 1909. Third is a stereoview photograph of Johnson sitting by the piano in his home in Chicago. Taken by E. W. Kelly in 1910. This is 3 ?” x 7” and shows some light foxing. Last is a 6 ?” x 8 ?” photo of Johnson with his wife in his car. The photo is mounted and is in fine condition except some chipping of the mount itself. Written on the mount is the date 1913 noting the shot was taken in Boston. There is no photographer’s credit. Exceptionally rare grouping including several shots not seen in this size at public sale.
