In 1935, the Downtown Athletic Club established the DAC Trophy, to be awarded to the best football player from a college east of the Mississippi River. A short time later the club’s athletic director, college coaching great, John W, Heisman, passed away and the prize was renamed the Heisman Memorial Trophy and has since been presented to the nation’s most outstanding college player. Presented is an autographed RKO Radio Picture promotional still of Jay Berwanger, the very first Heisman Tropy receipient. Signed in 1936, his 9/10 fountain pen inscription reads, “Jay Berwanger Univ. of Chic.”. The photo itself is EX with a few minor wrinkles. A very difficult ink specimen to find in its vintage form.
