Considered to be the best fielding first baseman of all-time, Hal Chase is best remembered as an unsavory character whose entire career was spent under a cloud of suspicion. Accused of throwing games throughout his many years, he was able to beat the charges until finally he was banned for life after the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Hal was not done with baseball though, and the Pacific Coast League, always looking for a draw, welcomed him with open arms. It was during that time that he would swing this personal Model Hillerich & Bradsby bat which measures 37" and weighs an astounding 39.8 oz. The front of the barrel is stamped with his block letter name, "CHASE", while the reverse is side-written in black marker that has since become almost illegible. The one segment that is distinguishable reads, "6-23", which indicates the date the bat was returned to the factory. Overall, this specimen's use can be described as exceptional, with an assortment of cleat dents, scuffs, and scrapes acquired prior to the bat's retirement due to a minor crack to the midsection. Futhermore, mild separation along the backside on the barrel has been repaired with a pair of small nails. A rare example from one of the game's most unforgettable and infamous characters.
