For as long as this card has existed, the 1933 Goudey card # 106 of Napoleon Lajoie has been considered a rarity and been near the top of every card collector's want list. As the story goes In 1933 the Goudey Gum Company issued the first of their many sets it consisted of 240 cards which included many members of the Hall of Fame. All of the players were currently playing when this set was issued except Napoleon Lajoie, card #106, who had been retired for many years. No matter how many packs were purchased it was impossible to complete the set of 240 cards. Everyone, of course, needed #106 (which did not exist). Some individuals wrote to complain directly to the Goudey Gum Company. Goudey apparently received enough complaints from their customers to prompt them to arrange for a special design and printing of card #106 Napoleon Lajoie. This special card was actually printed in 1934, and was sent by mail directly from Goudey to those who wrote into the company. This was the only way the Lajoie card was distributed, and as a result, today it is considered an extraordinary rarity. The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the most important of all 1930's gum card issues. The card of Lajoie is the most significant and valuable of all 1930's cards and is often put in the same sentence with the famous T206 Honus Wagner and Eddie Plank. From arms length the offered example has outstanding eye appeal. It has a crisp clear image of Lajoie, bright and vivid green coloring, very light wear to the corners and edges and is almost dead centered. The flaw of the card is it has 2 horizontal wrinkles running through Lajoie's shoulders. Additionally, on the reverse there is some extremely light pencil writing near the top of the card. This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very presentable example of one of the most desirable cards in the hobby.
