Those exhilarating days of late 1999, when Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs and Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals were battling with bats, neck and neck, killing balls out of the parks, determined to beat each other and the record books for single season home runs, when bona fide Major League Baseball and Chicago Cubs fan Douglas Potter entered the picture far out in the left field bleachers, second level, of Busch Stadium, at the last game of the regular season between the Cards and the Cubs, where he, as planned, caught Sosa’s last and final 63rd home run. Amazingly, McGwire blasted one out 2 innings earlier, and beat Sosa that season in the home run derby, 65-63, but it was this Official National League ball that symbolized that fabled derby and its end, as well as Sosa’s other benchmark as he was the first player ever to hit 60+ home runs in two consecutive seasons. Most impressive in this collection is this ball’s documentation, with photo of fan Douglas Potter with the ball at Busch Stadium, article on Potter from Chicago paper, PSA/DNA letter, Japanese television footage on DVD, and on and on and on. Even the glove used by Potter to catch the historic ball is included!!!
