Linebacker Tommy Thompson, the William and Mary grad, played for the Cleveland Browns from 1949 - 1953, and the Browns were one of the premiere teams of that era of post-WWII pro-football. This richly detailed game-worn jersey has several markings of action: large sweat stains around the collar and the armpits, as well as on the stomach and, in a quite unique aspect of this item, on the crotch piece (w/6 buttons). Thompson’s brown # 54 is sewn on (still) tightly on the front, and on the back, where light brownish sweat discolorations also brand this jersey with authenticity. A few team-repairs exist, three on the front and two on the back, but are quite well-woven and solid. Placed on the inside of crotch piece are the red manufacturer’s tag, “King O’Shea, Chicago,” and off that, Thompson’s size tag “50” and care tag “Dry Clean Only”. Also a “Blepp-Coombs” Cleveland sporting goods tag sewn next to above tag.
