On June 23, 1917, Shore achieved baseball immortality when he became the only pitcher to throw a perfect game without starting the game. He set another record by accomplishing the feat by only facing 26 batters. The bizarre achievement occurred when the Red Sox's starting pitcher, Babe Ruth, was ejected after arguing the umpire's called ball on a 3-2 pitch to the leadoff man. Shore got called in the game stone cold. After the runner was caught stealing, Shore retired the next 26 batters he faced, giving him a perfect game, with an asterisk! Shore had great promise but was never himself after serving in the Army in 1918 in WWI. He roomed with Ruth on the Yankees during his final two seasons before retiring after the 1920 season. Shore died in 1980 well ahead of autograph shows and single signed ball collectors, and single signed specimens from him are almost non-existent.
