Willie Worsley was there. He was an integral part of it. He stood only 5 feet 6 inches tall but that day he and his teammates were all ten feet tall. Worsley scored eight points and gathered four rebounds in the game that forever changed college basketball. It was the night five young black men started for the first time ever in an NCAA Championship game. And they won. The story is told in the recently released movie "Glory Road." He was a sophomore at Texas Western who had gone there from the South Bronx to play major college basketball. The date was March 19, 1966. Right before the opening tip-off Coach Don Haskins called four familiar names to start the game. This time he skipped over his starting forward Nevil Shed and turned to Worsley and said, "Willie, you're starting, too". History was made. After the game each member of the winning Texas Western squad received a watch from Bulova. This is the watch presented to Worsley. The face reads "NCAA Bulova Basketball Champion 1966". The inscription on the back is "Waterproof Bulova 10 KT RGP Case Shock Resistant Anti Magnetic Waterproof." The watch is in amazing condition and is in fine working order.
