A group of very well attired fans have turned out for Opening day at the Polo Grounds, April 15, 1909. Women are totally absent, not a single one among the cigars and bowler hats. Of special interest is the background, since this is one of the earlier versions of the Polo Grounds, constructed entirely of wood, and seating just 16,000 spectators. This ballfield burned to the ground in April, 1911, and was very quickly replaced in the same location by the steel and concrete stadium we all knew so well. Playing the Brooklyn Superbas on Opening Day, Giants pitcher Red Ames took a no-hitter through nine innings, only to see the Giants lose in the 11th inning., 0-3. Also worth noting, Brooklyn pitcher Kaiser Wilhelm maintained his own no-hitter into the eighth inning.This historic 6 ?” x 4 ?” photo is inscribed along the top edge with date and location, and bears both Culver Pictures and deaccession stamps on the reverse. Condition is VG-EX with small chips at the upper left and lower right corners, and with light dogears and minor rounding at other corners.
