A lively portrait of the “Yankee Clipper” appears in this exceptional watercolor by world-famous illustrator John Cullen Murphy. In addition to a smiling close-up, there are three images of DiMaggio in action - tapping the plate with his bat, running the bases and completing a swing for the long ball. As a child, John Cullen Murphy, dreamed of playing baseball, and was seen playing by Norman Rockwell, who asked him to pose for several magazine ads. Murphy was fascinated by the artistic process, and his own natural skills quickly became evident to Rockwell, who began his training. Murphy is known for his long-running “Big Ben Bolt” boxing comic strip, and was honored when comic strip legend Hal Foster asked him to take over his “Prince Valiant” series upon his retirement. The superb watercolor now at hand measures 14 1/2” x 17 1/2”, is matted to 20 1/2” x 23 1/2”, and is signed by the artist in the lower right corner. The watercolor originally hung in DiMaggio’s restaurant, and is ready to be framed and enjoyed once again.
