George Chuvalo didn’t learn his lesson the first time so he opted to fight Ali for a second time. Then again, he was very well compensated for his ventures into the ring against the “greatest.” Chuvalo was the heavyweight champion of Canada, and one of the Top Ten in the world. In 1965 he fought Floyd Patterson, a former heavyweight champion, at Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of boxing. Chuvalo went 15 rounds with Patterson and lost in a very closely fought contest. A few years later he got his first shot at Ali. Ali beat him easily but couldn’t knock him off his feet. It’s widely believed that this fight was the inspiration for Rocky. Ali deemed him “the toughest man” he ever fought, earning Chuvalo a place in boxing immortality as the biggest underdog to ever take Ali the distance. Chuvalo fought 93 professional fights and never got knocked down. This is the site poster used to advertise the fight in and around Western Canada and the northwest US. The fight took place in Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum. Very rare because it bears the date that the fight was originally set for.
