This lot contains the Puerto Rican League contracts of Chet Brewer and Piper Davis. Brewer was a RHP who played for Kansas City, Washington, Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Cleveland and Tennessee, making the All-Stars in ‘34, ‘37 & ‘48. He won 30 games in 1930 and 33 in 1934, including 16 straight. Despite striking out 19, including 10 in a row, he was the losing pitcher in a 1-0 12 inning match-up vs. Smokey Joe Williams (who struck out 27) on August 2, 1930. His 1941 contract to play for the Mayaguez-India team ($40.00 a week) bears the boldest of signatures of Brewer’s in black fountain pen (9.5/10). Contract is in VGEX shape, with two punch holes at upper portion affect nothing too important. Lorenzo “Piper” Davis was the first black player signed by the Boston Red Sox in 1950. Though he never played in the majors, he was an outstanding athlete who also played basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters. He was also known for signing a 16 year old Willie Mays to a professional contract. His Puerto Rican League contract from November of 1947 is boldly signed in green fountain pen on the inside (9/10). Punch holes on this one go through Davis’ handwritten address below his signature. Excellent condition with light bending in lower left.
