Ernie Davis, the Elmira Express, would have without a doubt had a great NFL career as a running back had his life not been tragically cut short by leukemia in 1963. Still considered one of the best college running backs ever from his years at Syracuse University, the Heisman Trophy winner got his start on the gridiron at Elmira Free Academy. This yearbook from the high school includes a letter of authenticity signed by the book’s former owner. Davis’ salutation to his friend on page 68 reads “What’s happening Gush? Best of Luck to a swell kid. Ernie.” It was written above a photograph in the yearbook of Davis with other leaders of the school’s freshmen class. Davis is pictured with the football, basketball and baseball teams. The book is in EX condition and was signed by other classmates of Robert Gush, a classmate of Davis. Its blue cover has signs of wear and fading at the edges and the binding has come loose at the bottom.
