This program is from what is now is called “The Alfie Moore Game”. On April 5, 1938, Mike Karakas, the Black Hawks’ starting goalie, was injured in the pre-game warm-ups. Chicago had no replacement for Karakas. In the stands was little Alfa Moore, a New York Americans farm system netminder. The Hawks got special permission from the NHL to have Moore suit up for them. Alfie led Chicago to a 3-1 victory in the first game of the Cup Finals. He was ruled ineligible for the rest of the series, but the Black Hawks ended up winning the series in four games. This Game 1 “Official Programme” is fully intact and features some of the leading advertisements of the day such as “Don’t skate around on smooth tires--Get Goodyear’s with Centre Traction.” (from Earl Holmes of Uptown Tire) and “STOP for a pause GO refreshed DRINK Coca-Cola Dick Dowling’s boys have it ready to serve Ice-Cold” and “Aids Digestion! Enjoy Wrigley’s after every meal!”. This program includes a compelling 4 page “The Editor’s Viewpoint” written by Frank J. Selke, after whom the trophy annually awarded “to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game” is named. Selke waxes philosophical on the preceding Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers vs. Chicago Blackhawk’s semi-finals series and goes into great detail on the regular season match-ups between these teams.
