Long before Rocky Balboa entered the movie ring, a couple of real boxers stepped into the cinematic arena. In the 1933 film, The Prizefighter and the Lady, Max Baer ( who won the heavyweight boxing title in 1934) played a fighter (early reality casting!) who falls for a beautiful nightclub singer. Fellow professional boxer and world heavyweight champion Primo Carnera of Italy, appeared as Baer’s opponent in the climactic fight scene. It was the film debut for both. A bit of trivia: Carnera refused to lose as the script indiciated and the ending was eventually rewritten! After ending his boxing career, Max Baer earned his living as an actor. This black & white official motion pictures World’s Heavyweight Championship poster features action poses of Carnera and Baer as well as big, red lettering of their names. The poster, which measures approx. 14” x 22”, is NRMT but has a folding crease in the center.
