Fabulous and arcane wire service photo of Ty Cobb at bat in his prime offers a revealing look at the man who hit .367 over his career, won 14 batting titles and retired with 90 hitting records. Cobb is seen striding to meet the pitch, his boy in perfect alignment, his jaw set in stone and his eyes widening in anticipation. A full grandstand pans out behind him. How great a hitter was he? Cobb, who considered choking up and slap hitting the way to go, once told reporters that hitting home runs didn’t take any special skill. To prove his point, he slid his hands down to the knob of the bat, Ruthian style, then 3 homers that day -- and 2 more the next day. Not generally known is that he once led the AL in homers (with 9), in winning the Triple Crown in 1909. The 5 x 7” photo has an International stamping on the back and is impressively EX+ w/the slightest wrinkling and a tiny speck on the upper right. Glued-on strips of paper on the back do not stray onto the front.
