This star-spangled program/scorecard from the 1942 All-Star Game reflects both the patriotism and anxiety felt by the nation that Summer of ’42 when America was at war. Ballplayers were starting to ship out and the game offered the last chance to see its biggest stars on the same field. In the next year or two, familiar names on the centerfold scorecard -- DiMaggio, Williams, Boudreau, Slaughter, et al. -- would be gone. The game was swathed in wartime emotion. Originally scheduled for Brooklyn, it was moved to the Polo Grounds for its larger capacity, as profits from the game went to various war charities. Cover of the program has the image of a batter in a circle under an eagle and surrounded by red, white and blue columns flecked with stars. The inside pages contain “Air Raid Regulations” and reminders that the park was not “bombproof”. One of several original inserts explains Mayor LaGuardia’s “system of safety” that includes “sitting tight” or following green or red arrows if a raid occurred. Centerfold box score of the AL’s 3-1 victory is neatly charted in pencil. 6.5 x 10” cardboard program is EX, still tightly bound w/scant damage beyond the pages darkening into a golden brown, a few snags and a gentle fold mark down the middle of the cover, and boasts some great period ads for beer, booze and cigars.
