Gibson, who probably couldn’t wait to sample the island’s many cervesas and hot senoritas, was among the first of the wave of Negro leaguers who streamed in for the league’s first year of existence to make a few extra bucks under the swaying palms, along with fellow HOFers Satchel Paige (Guayama) and Leon Day (Aguadilla). This not only began a tradition that endured well into the ‘50s but began Santurce’s reign as the kings of the island, its 1954-55 team featuring an outfield that included both Willie Mays and native icon Roberto Clemente.
