One of Cuba's best pitchers of the 1950's, he came into his own as a reliever with the Boston Red Sox and as a teammate of Ted Williams in his final year of 1960. There he went 10-5 and led the league with fourteen saves and an AL-record seventy appearances. In 1961 he welcomed Yaz with career-high fifteen saves and became an American League All-Star.
