This monumentally rare and stunningly exquisite 1963 AFL Championship ring from off the finger of HOF receiver Lance Alworth will no doubt drop more than a few jaws among classic AFL memorabilia collectors, especially since it belonged to a guy who seemingly never dropped a pass in his life. Alworth, in fact, may have been the most perfect pass-catcher ever created, which is why none other than Al Davis, as a San Diego Charger assistant coach, was waiting on the field as Alworth’s final college game as an All-American at Arkansas ended, and signed him on the spot for the fledgling league that gained instant credit when he came aboard in 1962 (though they had to sweat it out when Alworth hedged after the NFL’s 49ers wooed him as well). “Bambi” -- so nicknamed for his incredible antelope-like grace, slender build and blinding speed -- made Sid Gillman’s bomb-happy offense lethal -- such as when he hauled in a 48-yard TD pass from John Hadl in the ‘63 AFL title game on Jan. 5, 1964 at Balboa Stadium against the Boston Patriots, stoking a 51-10 slaughter that brought the team its sole AFL championship. It also climaxed a year in which he caught 61 passes for 1,205 yards (a 19.8 average per catch) and 11 TDs. Later in his career the 7-time all-AFL selection caught a TD for the Cowboys in that team’s Super Bowl VI victory over Miami, and in 1978 became the 1st Charger -- and AFL player -- to be inducted into the HOF. This ring may have been the sweetest of all the spoils he savored. The gorgeous 10K gold ring is anchored by a glittering diamond-shaped stone mounted on an azure blue, football-shaped stone surrounded by a silver border and a gold corona engraved “San Diego Chargers 1963 World Champions.” Left shank engraved “Alworth” over the figure of a player. Right shank engraved “San Diego 51 - Boston 10” on a banner above the Chargers’ logo and “AFL” over a football. Ring is a spectacular NRMT. Needless to say, you won’t find many -- or any -- of these babies, in whatever condition, under a tree. Many AFLers take such pride in making the league a success that they refuse to part with these symbols of its golden age. Especially the golden symbols like this beauty, given to the AFL’s answer to Raymond Berry. Ring is sized at 10.75 and comes in a unique gold cylinder box in EX condition.
