"There's a long drive way back in center field . . . way back, back! It is . . . oh, what a catch by Mays! The runner on second, Doby, is able to go to third. Willie Mays . . . just brought this crowd to its feet . . . with a catch . . . which must have been an optical illusion to a lot of people. Boy!" -- Jack Brickhouse, NBC-TV. In baseball you can say "The Catch" and baseball fans know immediately know to what it is referring to. One of the most memorable moments in World Series history occurred at the Polo Grounds on September 29, 1954. It was the eighth inning of the first game when Vic Wertz sent the ball flying to the deepest part of the Polo Grounds. Mays turned and sped to the spot where he would haul it in over the shoulder. The spectacular moment is immaculately captured in this “20” X “24” B+W photo with Mays’ silver felt tipped autograph.
