The 1964 Topps card of Willie Mays is unique because so many cards often captured him in happy poses to reflect his love of the game. This well-centered '64 (PSA MINT 9) appears to catch him in a sour moment, with one eye closed or injured. Note the subdued color. Topps pulled back on the '64s, and the effect captivates. It's almost as if to say that the life of a ballplayer -- even Willie Mays -- is not always wonderful. The mustard print on the front and peach on the back were worthy gambles for the card giant in presenting this giant Giant.
