Content, content, content. Startling letter dated May 31, 1949, and typed on Ty Cobb’s Menlo Park, California stationery. The still arrogant Cobb acts as a semi-official emissary for the Baseball Hall of Fame (he was the greatest living player) informing Kid Nichols he has been elected to Cooperstown. To “Charles A. Nichols” this quite official sounding document states: Dear Charles Nichols: I have an announcement from the National Baseball Hall of Fame, that you have been elected as a member. This gives me great pleasure for I knew quite well from your record that you belonged in the Baseball Hall of Fame. I have been much interested as a fellow ball player, admiring what you established with your ability. You might not have known of my interest and to be sure, I am writing you this to say that it pleases me greatly that you have been elected. Am quite sure Kansas City would get you, but to make certain, I am sending this thru the Sporting News. Sincerely: Ty Cobb (signed).” Beautiful mint signature in black ink. Letter is affixed to scrapbook page (could be removed) and has some light stains at the corners which may lighten when removed from the page.
