Founded in 1902, Cupples & Leon grew to become the biggest comic book publisher of the first half of the century. By the '30s, it owned the rights to an astounding number of comic properties such as the five famous strips -- Little Orphan Annie, Smitty, Reg'lar Fellers, The Adventures of Harold Teen, Dick Tracy (and Dick Tracy Jr.) -- published in book form in this amazingly rare circa-1930 Treasure Box of Famous Comics. These 7 x 8 1/2" full-length book versions (not to mention the box itself) are some of the hardest to find vintage comic items. Each book has a color cover, duplicated on the back, depicting the characters such as Annie and her dog Sandy, and b&w inside pages. Books are a splendid EX-NRMT, while the 7 1/4 x 9 x 1 1/4" box has suffered extensive damage, with the top having separated from the bottom and two of the the side flaps (one reading "Treasure Box of Famous Comics, Five Books, Cupples & Leon Company, New York") detached completely. However, the artwork on the top of the box featuring a collage of the five comics is essentially untouched and the yellow and red colors bright and crisp. Also some pencil notations on the boxtop. In any condition, a treasure box indeed. Leapin' lizards!
