This famous original 1923 charcoal drawing is by Brooklyn-born artist Harrison Fisher (1875-1934), one of the most important illustrators of this period. This keynote piece shows Fisher's archtypical image of young womanhood: an elegant young lady with yearning eyes, a pert sense of sexuality and a natural shy innocence. Though never titled, given the subject's "Bette Davis eyes" one could easily believe it is in fact the famous screen siren, as Fisher (dubbed "The Father of A Thousand Girls") included these traits in his renderings of many actresses of the day whose vulnerabilities were never exposed on film the way they were on his canvases. Though his art appeared frequently in Cosmopolitan magazine, his portraits of young women -- of which this is one of the most famous -- are his legacy and never fail to haunt those who observe them. The added bonus of this sensational and culturally profound piece is a personal inscription in the same charcoal that created the image, reading: "To 'Jimmy' Thompson from his friend, Harrison Fisher, 1923" -- a superb and extremely hard to find NRMT Fisher signature. The image area measures 13 1/2 x 21 1/2" within a matted surface and preserved under glass in a brown wood frame sized overall to 20 x 29". Drawing remains in beautiful condition with the only damage being some discoloration of the border area, adhesive damage on the lower right corner and mild chipping of the frame. Great piece that shows how Fisher's art has influenced the culture's image of women to this day.
