Regarded as one of the greatest players to ever step into cleats and play the game of baseball, DiMaggio reigned as the king of New York Yankees baseball for more than 60 years. Joltin' Joe's powerful swing and graceful stride are as well remembered and respected today as they was during his prime. Said by Ted Williams during the height of their fierce rivalry, "he's the greatest baseball player of our time." The anchor of nine World Championship teams, three-time MVP, and thirteen time all-star, Ted may have to be corrected as many feel that he's the greatest player of any time. In 1939 Gum Incorporated introduced this brief, war-shortened, but innovative era of baseball card production with this outstanding set. Extremely popular due to their combination of actual player photos, large card size (2 1/2" x 3 1/8"), and extensive biographies the cards have been the favorite of collectors since their inception. Offered is the 1939 Playball Joe DiMaggio, graded Mint (96) by SGC Authenticators. One of only two examples ever to receive such a mark, it is quite possibly the finest specimen known to exist. The Clipper's portrait on front boasts superior clarity and quality, surrounded by four snow white borders with edges and corners that are razor sharp. Both surfaces are spotless, absent of even the most minor of imperfections and the text on back has remained bold and crisp. Undoubtedly the future centerpiece to any top end collection.
