Unspeakably rare 1910 pocket tobacco tin marketed under the name "Ty Cobb Granulated Cut Plug For Pipe and Cigarette" and boasting the color image of the legendary Georgia Peach on front and back. Beyond doubt, this is one of the scarcest of memorabilia items, both for collectors of antique tobacco tins and of vintage baseball ephemra, not to mention Cobb devotees. While Cobb's image on cards, pins, etc. is commonly found, and are certainly rare pieces, we can't think of anything this esoteric as a receptacle for Cobb's likeness (in this case, a very fresh-faced likeness). Of deeper significance is that it confirms Cobb's willingness to market his image, a rare phenomenon among athletes in 1910. Cobb was surely ahead of his time in this respect, as shown by his early investment in Coca Cola that made him a millionaire. The tin's ultra rare status is increased by the fact that we don't know if and how many of these tins were ever actually released into circulation, and if so, for how long. Cobb's image on the tin, with his bat on his shoulder, was based on the same photograph used to paint his image for the T206 baseball card. The strong visual appeal stands up extremely well after all these years, as do the bright red and other colors on the tin, with paint retained at 85%. There is rust on the top and bottom of the tin that has combined with the natural gold color on the tin's cover to yield a very pleasing and even dark brown hue. Absolutely scintillating artifact, on so many levels.
