In this 1965 letter -- one of the most important pieces of "Star Trek" memorabilia to ever surface -- producer Gene Roddenberry lays out his vision and demands for the show to his agent, weeks before it was purchased by NBC. Roddenberry may seem stubborn, even delusional, but only his dogged pursuit of that vision made the show so infused to the core of sci-fi fans for generations to come. The February 12th letter, on Desilu Productions stationery, reads in part, "We have an opportunity like 'Gulliver's Travels' of a century or more ago, to combine spectable-excitement for a mass group along with meaningful drama and something of substance and pride". And yet he is wary of making network-ordered compromises: "I'm not that anxious to sell the show. (I) have no desire to risk heart attack or ulcers without at least a fighting chance to make entertainment I can be proud of." Toward that end, he demanded a decent budget time slot. To Roddenberry, we say thanks for sticking to his guns. The typed 4-page missive is signed "Gene R" in blue pen, a signature that like the letter is Mint and a must-get for Trekkies and all showbiz scholars.
