Among western artist Lorence Bjorkland's many illustrations of General George Custer is this remarkable rendering of Custer's 7th Cavalry playing baseball in the Black Hills while being watched by two Indian scouts (and we don't mean Cleveland Indians). The original pencil drawing, certainly a one of a kind baseball artifact, was used as the dust jacket for the book "Private Theodore Ewert's Diary of the Black Hills Expedition of 1874". The kicker is that apparently only two years after the scene depicted in the drawing, Custer and his troops were massacred by the Sioux at Little Big Horn on June 25, 1876. Illustration is deeply detailed. Especially striking is the unit of soldiers standing at attention while watching the game. 15 x 20" mounted on cardboard and in mint condition.
