Pictured in one of these two vintage photos are the first man and first woman to go into space, Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova. On April 12, 1961Gagarin rode his Vostok 1 space capsule into the heavens on a one-orbit flight, returning to a hero's reception worldwide. On June 16, 1963 Tereshkova orbited the earth 48 times on a three-day ride in Vostok 6. The photo was taken in October 1963. Gagarin's hard-to-find signature appears on the second photo in which he appears with three other cosmonauts who also signed the picture. Both photos, which show modest degrees of aging, were owned by an East German collector for over 40 years.
