From the glory days of the House of David - this fabulous sign announced a Wednesday Night game at Covington Park between the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Southern League, versus the House of David baseball team. The legend of the House of David provides tales of the most recognized traveling minor league team in history. This charismatic religious sect known as the HOD competed against local and Negro League teams, drawing better crowds than Major League teams of the time. Famous for their night baseball, heavily bearded faces and long hair, the team members did not believe in shaving or cutting their hair. Sign in frame reads, “Baseball, Birmingham Black Barons vs. House of David, Covington Park, Wednesday Night July 8…7P.M.” Print in blue lettering is nearly perfect except for some paper loss around the “B” in upper left corner. Although there is some chaffing to the paper from age and oxidation, the printed lettering remains remarkably unaffected. Matted and framed to 15x18”.
