Although the 1916 Oympic Games were scheduled for Berlin, Germany, the onset of World War I interfered with those plans. That order was bestowed upon Antwerp 4 years later. Nevertheless, this gorgeous two-sided large lead medallion (3.5x4.5”), produced for what would have been the 1916 Games of the VII Olympiad is a fascinating piece of Olympic history. Raised image on the front is a bust of Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. Underneath is the sentiment on raised lettering: “A Pierre de Coubertin, XX Anniversaire du retablissement des Olympiades, Le Comite International Olympique.” On the reverse is the raised image of a winged angel and the Greek Pantheon in the background. Engraved lettering lists the cities and years of the previous Olympic Games sites. Artist’s name, “H. Kautsch” engraved in bottom right corner. EX-MT condition with little to no wear to the details on raised images or lettering.
