The Mona Lisa of baseball contracts. Actually more rare than even a Babe Ruth or a Lou Gehrig, a Mickey Mantle contract is a coveted object. Recently obtained from the auction of the Mickey Mantle Estate, this is one of but a handful of 1950s Mantle contracts that were sold (as American as apple pie and Yankee Stadium). Mickey’s personal copy, this “Uniform Player’s Contract” from the “American League of Professional Baseball Clubs” is from the “New York Yankees” and is for local stud “Mickey C. Mantle” of “Dallas, Texas.” Paying him a major league generous $70,000 can you imagine what he would have made today with his fan appeal, movie star looks and bone crushing power? Contract was filled out (and signed by) on the 26th of January 1959 by “H. Roy Haney” of the “New York Yankees.” It is signed in the mintest Yankee blue ink in his inimitable 1959 vintage signature “Mickey Mantle” with “Player” printed below (ah yes, that he was!). This fresh as a daisy, brand new looking contract is folded o/w NRMT, all writing is mint. Best of all this comes with an extra signed contract between the Yankees and The Mick. This offensive 8.5x11” single pager agrees “that the sum of Ten Thousand ($10,000) Dollars will be withheld from my 1959 salary to be paid at the end of the season if in the judgment of the New York Club I have lived up to all the rules and conditions set forth by the Club.” Dated February 27, 1959, it is signed at the bottom by General (Manager) “George M. Weiss” and “Mickey Mantle” in stunning rich blue fountain pen. That is a full 15% of his salary! Can you imagine the Yankees trying to get away with that today? Marvin Miller would come after them with a meat cleaver. Folded o/w mint. Comes in the original auction envelope signifying it is from the Mantle Family with their LOA.
