To your delight, we present the 1927 Philadelphia Royal Giants from their 1927 tour of Japan; whose lineup boasted the legendary talent and best defensive catcher in the history of the Negro Leagues, Raleigh “Biz” Mackey. This one has seen better days, but the simple fact that it exists is a beautiful thing. Taken in Honolulu, it encompasses 12 Royal Giants, including Mackey, who is holding a trophy with his manager. On the left side of the panorama is the Asahi Japanese baseball club. All lined up in a row, these two teams together on this panorama represent one of the finest and most special Negro League images in existence. This was the first NL team in history to tour Japan. Also pictured is Rap Dixon, who hit a home run in Japan that was so memorable, the Japanese marked the spot on the fence and the emperor gave him a trophy. Plus, Duncan, Walker, & Cooper. There are considerably affected areas, particularly the edges, which have sustained water damage and severe curling, but the center of the photo displays all the players splendidly and in great contrast. There is a 3” crack in the paper on the right side splitting the second baseman, Fagan, in half from the waist down. All other players are perfect. Some creasing, mostly from 6” out to the edges on either side. Both teams dressed in full uniform with the stands behind them filled with people. This was developed with each player’s name and position underneath. Truly an incredible piece.
