One-page indenture of mortgage document, dated August 23, 1828, signed by Clement C. Moore, American writer and scholar. Today, Moore is best known as the author of the classic Christmas poem A Visit From St. Nicholas, which begins "Twas the Night Before Christmas." The document, which is both preprinted and handwritten (in an unknown hand) certifies that Jacob Hoagland, a New York City grocer, has fully repaid Clement C. Moore for an indenture of Mortgage in the amount of $950. It has been signed by "Clement C. Moore" in black fountain pen (grading 9/10) at the base, along with two witnesses. The document (7.5x6.25") displays toning, a horizontal fold that has been reinforced on the reverse with vintage tape, and several small border tears. Full LOA from PSA.
