Displayed is a 1946 All-Star Game complimentary ticket signed by the undisputed star of the game, Ted Williams. The game was MLB's 13th All-Star contest, played at Boston's Fenway Park in front of 34,906 fans. The Red Sox had four players in the American League's starting line-up: Dom DiMaggio, leading off and playing center field; Johnny Pasky batting second at shortstop; Willaims batting third and playing left field; Bobby Doerr, batting fifth and playing second base. Williams hit a bases empty home run off the Brooklyn Dodgers' Kirby Higbe in the 4th inning and a 3-run home run in the 8th inning, off an "Eephus" pitch from Pittsburgh Pirates' right-hander Rip Sewell, who threw three straight "Eephus" balls to the Splendid Splinter". Williams hit the third pitch into the right field stand for a 3-run home run, the first time Sewell had given up a home run on his Eephus Pitch", a high, lobbed pitch, like a slow pitch softball lob, except Sewell threw it overhand. Williams went 4-for-4 on the day, with four runs scored, five RBIs, and his two homers. There was no All-Star Game MVP in those years, but Williams would have won the '46 All-Star Game MVP in a landslide. The Cleveland Indians' Bob Feller took the win, and the Chicago Cubs' Claude Passeau had the loss. Williams may not have been the '46 All-Star Game MVP, but he did bat .342, with 38 home runs and 123 RBIS. In that tremendous season, Williams led the American League in runs (142), Bases on Balls (156), OBP (.497), Slugging (.667) and OPS (1.164), and he most deservedly won the '46 AL MVP.
The complimentary pass has the Red Sox logo, and it reads, "COMPLIMENTS of the BOSTON RED SOX/ALL_STAR GAME/JULY 9, 1946". The pass measures approx. 2.25x3.5". Originally, the pass was white cardstock or paper, but it has now darkened through the passage of years. Williams, using blue, ballpoint ink, signed in yet, yet bold, flowing script at the bottom of the card. The back is blank and shows some creasing and tape residue. The signed card has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA CERTIFIED "AUTHENTIC AUTO" (85619159). The card has some light corner wear, and a vertical fold on the right side. The offering makes a great remembrance for Williams great 1946 All-Star Game performance in his AL MVP season.
