Displayed is a 1973 Secretariat bronze (#1/140), created by Rene Williams and showing "Big Red" in full stride. One of the greatest thoroughbreds of all time, Secretariat was foaled on March 30, 1970, by Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal. An immense, powerful horse, the chestnut stallion stood 16.2 hands when grown ('73), with a weight of 1,200 lbs. As a 3-year-old, Secretariat won the 9th American Triple Crown, the first Triple Crown in 25 years. In all three races, Secretariat had Ron Turcotte aboard, and Secretariat was trained in all three races by Lucien Laurin. In the '73 Kentucky Derby, at 9.5 furlongs, Secretariat won in 1:59, still a record at Churchill Downs. At the Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the '73 Triple Crown, at 10 furlongs, Secretariat ran a 1:53 race. In the final leg of the Triple Crown, 12 furlongs on dirt, Secretariat set the still standing record of 2:24.
The offered bronze was created by Rene Williams. From the bottom of the base to the top of the bronze is approx. 9.5". The bronze is 17" long, including the base. The work weighs 19 lbs. Secretariat was renowned for his exceptionally long stride, measured at 24 ft. 11" at trials '73 for The Preakness, and the artists great eye for detail shows in the outstretched legs and powerful hindquarters of Big Red. Ron Turcotte is depicted forward, riding off his saddle, his forearms rippling. Carved into the hind part of the work is "RW '73" (the sculptor's initials and year), "SHAW" and "1/40". Along the right side is etched, "Secretariat". Near the front, on the right side, is etched Rene Williams". The offered Secretariat bronze is in EXCELLENT condition.
