Presented is a Boston Red Sox versus Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park scored game program and scorecard from Friday afternoon, July 10, 1914, on the day before Babe Ruth made his Major League debut. On the July 10th game, 4,785 fans watched the Red Sox win 5-1. Hall of Famers Harry Hooper and Tris Speaker started for Boston, playing right field and center field respectively. Hall of Famer Smokey Joe Wood was one of the spare Red Sox pitchers that day, appearing in the game as a pinch runner and scoring a run as Rankin Johnson took the win for the Red Sox. Shano Collins, the right fielder for the White Sox this day, along with the July 10, 1914, catcher, Ray Schalk, were two of the honest players when some of the White Sox threw the 1919 World Series. Buck Weaver, who appeared in the 7/10/14 game as a pinch hitter for Chicago, was later one of the "Eight Men Out" White Sox who were banned from baseball after the 1919 World Series.

Babe Ruth was sold to the Red Sox, along with Ernie Shore and Ben Egan, from Baltimore of the international League, for $25,000 on July 9th, the day before the game scored in this offered program. Ruth's name is not in the program yet, but he made his MLB Debut the following day, on July 11th. He started the game as a pitcher, went seven innings and took the win in a 4-3 Red Sox victory over the Cleveland Naps. At bat, Ruth was 0-for-2. Ruth's debut was relatively subdued. It was one of the few times he was subdued in anything. The program is scored, in pencil, for seven-and-a half innings of the nine-inning game. This game is the one time the Red Sox beat the White Sox at Fenway in 1914, making it easy to date the scored program.

The program measures 6x9", and it appears to have a few pages missing from the second half of the program. Both scored pages from the scorecard part of the program still remain. The program exhibits some darkening and a few small stains. The cover of the program reads, "Season 1914/Boston American League Baseball Club/Price 5 Cents." The 111-year-old advertisements in the program are fascinating: A one-page ad for the United Shoe Manufacturing Company, run by A.G. Spalding, who pitched in the 1800s for Boston and in 1914 still ran the Spalding Company - a firm still famous for sports equipment today; an advertisement for straw hats; an advertisement for German Frankforts (later called frankfurters). Very good condition, with minor binding separation towards bottom, with unknown handwriting on front by attendees. Aside from the probable missing pages, the program is in very good condition.
