Two navy military caps, manufactured by Banta of New York, worn for a Civil War Reunion. These caps were made for Fred Charles Barger (label printed with “F.C. Barger” on the inside of each hat). A Civil War hero, Barger enlisted in New York when he was 16 years old and was promoted quickly from private to First Lieutenant, then to Second Lieutenant. He was discharged in 1864 due to an injured right hand at the Battle of Fredericksburg (1862) from a piece of shrapnel. His hand was amputated on the field of battle. This Civil War hero went on to live a prosperous life, founding F.C. Barger & Co. in 1880, and later being selected as the president of the New York Mercantile Exchange (1900-1901). He was also the Merc’s treasurer for many years. Caps with embroidered designs on fronts – one is American Eagle, the other a star-like red emblem. Ornamental gold ropes adorn each visor. Short 2” black visors have been polished. Considerable use and wear is evident to the insides of both. Outer portion is EX. Included are three “Confederate States of America” notes, printed in Richmond, VA. In 1861. $1: Fair, $5: split in half, $10: VG.
