Detroit Lions home jersey worn by defensive lineman Gil Mains during the late 1950s. The blue Dureen jersey features the number "72" on the front, reverse, and each sleeve. All numerals are applied in silver tackle twill. Located on the interior front tail are a "Rawlings 48" label, a "Lippman's (Detroit) label, a wash tag, and a size tag reading "L." The letter "H" is chain-stitched in white upon a small blue strip tag in the collar. The jersey, complete with crotch strap, is original as issued and displays heavy wear, including soiling, a few tiny tears, and a few small team repairs. This uniform style dates to the four-year span 1957 to 1960. During that time, Gil Mains was the only player to wear number "72" for the Lions. Detroit won the NFL Championship in 1957, defeating the Cleveland Browns 59-14 in the title game. 1950s NFL game jerseys are scarce and this is an outstanding example dating from the era of Detroit's last NFL Championship.
