The Providence Reds played in the Canadian-American Hockey League from 1926-36, and then in the American Hockey League, the NHL's top farm circuit, from 1936-77. Offered is a 1970s game worn Providence Reds goalie jersey. The Reds team played as an affiliate of numerous NHL teams over the years, including the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. The team is named for a well-known type of chicken, Rhode Island Reds. The Reds played in the Rhode Island Auditorium and then later in the Providence Civic Center. For many years, the team was affiliated with the New York Rangers. Goalie Marcel Paille, often in the employ of the parent Rangers, played 402 games as a Providence Red. In many seasons, Paille would play in games for both the Rangers and the Reds. Paille was with the Reds until 1972, so it is a possibility that it was game worn by Paille, but it could have been worn by a number of other Providence goalies. A small sample of the NHL players who played hockey with the Providence Reds: Hall of Famers Milt Schmidt, Gump Worsley, Ed Giacomin, and Allan Stanley, plus stars Muzz Patrick, and Camille Henry.
The offered game worn Providence Reds jersey is white, trimmed in red, white, and blue - the colors of the NHL's New York Rangers The front has string ties at the neck, and on the chest is the Providence Reds logo, with the comb of a rooster and a large red letter "R." Each of the long sleeves has a blue "1" trimmed in red. The back has the traditional goalie number "1" in blue with red trim. The neck has a Rawlings manufacturer's tag, showing size "50." The jersey shows great wear. There are quite a number of small, unrepaired holes, most likely caused by hockey sticks or possibly skates. There are also some small stains and some pilling and slash marks. The attached photo is from the consignor who attended a Providence Reds game in the 1970s. We cannot say it is the same jersey in the picture as the offered jersey, but it is the same number "1."
